Since 1987, the Migros Culture Percentage has been promoting the Swiss music scene with the Musiques Suisses record label. The Swiss label’s concept is deliberately broad, encompassing all music that is connected to Switzerland, ranging from classical, to jazz, to folk music.
Whenthe Migros Culture Percentage established the Musikszene Schweiz initiative in 1987, it aimed to place «Swiss music in all its variety and contrast» squarely on the map. Today, Migros Culture Percentage’s CD label is called Musiques Suisses and is the leading label for Swiss classical and new folk music. The concept is deliberately broad, effectively making it possible for Swiss music to be anything, from the popular «Stubete» folk music, to a Swiss orchestra’s classical flute concerts, to a Serbian immigrant’s compositions that blend traditional Balkan music with American jazz.
The Musiques Suisses label now boasts three sub-labels: Grammont Portrait for new music, Neue Volksmusik which seeks out examples of innovative arrangements featuring traditional Swiss music, and Musiques Suisses/Jazz, which is a collaboration with the Swiss radio’s cultural channel, Radio SRF 2 Kultur. In addition to the Swiss Public Broadcasting Association (the SRG SSR), Musiques Suisses , amongst others, has dedicated partnerships with Pro Helvetia, Suisa and various organisations of artists and producers involved in Switzerland’s music scene.
