After a catastrophic marine earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggers a devastating tsunami that hits the coastal regions of South and South East Asia on 26 December 2004, the FMC donates CHF 1 million to Swiss Solidarity. A donation of CHF 500,000 from the "Fund for Targeted Aid" is also made. A further CHF 200,000 is donated by individual Migros cooperatives and Migros Group companies. Switzerland does not escape disaster either. At the end of August, flooding and mudslides inundate half of Switzerland, causing huge damage. Migros—whose stores are hit in some areas, including Lucerne and Bern—donates CHF 500,000 to the affected regions.
