In the middle of the Cold War, Gottlieb Duttweiler founds Reederei Zürich AG. Two merchant vessels are built for overseas voyages. Adele Duttweiler christens the first ship, which is named after her, in 1952. The 6,000-tonne motorised vessel named "Adele" is launched in 1952 at the Stülcken shipyard in Hamburg's free port. It is 117 metres long and 16 metres wide. The second cargo ship bears the name "Sunamelia." The two merchant vessels travel at a speed of 16 to 17 knots (approx. 30 kilometres an hour) and have cabins for up to 12 passengers. The powerful engines are built by Sulzer AG and the ships are operated in cooperation with the shipping company C. Clausen, Copenhagen. By operating the two cargo ships "Adele" and "Sunamelia," Gottlieb Duttweiler hopes to secure transport capacities for Migros in the event of war.
