The Migros Culture Percentage has been involved in the contemporary dance scene since 1988 with the Steps dance festival. Every other year, renowned international dance troupes tour throughout Switzerland for several weeks. The festival’s goal? «Thrill new audiences with dance!»
The dancers who set foot on stage in the spring of 1988 at the very first Steps international dance festival came from all over Europe, the United States and Switzerland. The tour was organised through the FCM cultural initiatives, subsequently known as Migros Culture Percentage. No one had any idea that it was the first of what would become a recurring festival, held every two years.
Indeed, the basic Steps structure is immediately recognisable and has changed very little to this day: Regional ties are fostered through cooperation with local tour operators; programmes are diverse thanks to dance troupes from home and abroad, subsidised ticket prices that allow greater participation, as well as the first performances being held at schools.
In 1988, Migros promoted a cultural division through Steps that garnered little attention outside a die-hard fan base. But this all changed thanks to Steps , which quickly became Switzerland’s most important dance culture event. In 2012 alone, 32,000 spectators watched 45 different performances under the auspices of the festival, which formally adopted the name Migros Culture Percentage Dance Festival .
