OBI Group assumes control of Migros' OBI stores

The OBI Group is assuming control of the ten existing OBI locations, plus one Migros OBI store still under construction as well as two large Do it + Garden stores. The 576 employees and 61 apprentices will continue to be employed by the new owner.
The OBI stores previously operated by Migros under the franchising system will now be run by the OBI Group. The negotiations on the sale have been successfully completed. The OBI Group will assume control of all of the OBI locations in Switzerland—including the store in Agno, Ticino, which is currently under construction—and will manage the business itself. The two Do it + Garden locations in Carouge, canton Geneva, and Nyon, canton Vaud, will also be transferred to the OBI Group. Providing very large retail space, they meet the ideal conditions for an OBI store. All employees and apprentices working in the OBI and Do it + Garden stores being disposed of will continue to be employed by the OBI Group.
The OBI stores will be transferred on 1 April, the store in Agno on 2 May 2025, while the two Do it + Garden stores will follow on 1 July 2025.
Warranties and services relating to products purchased by customers at the OBI stores and the two Do it + Garden stores will be transferred to and honoured by the OBI Group. This will not result in any changes for customers.
"Our vision is to be the first point of contact for our customers in the home and garden sector throughout Europe – and Switzerland fits in perfectly with our vision for the future. As our longstanding partner Migros is focussing on its core business, this is a highly relevant strategic investment for us. We are delighted to now have the opportunity to provide our extensive customer experience– both in-store and online—in Switzerland directly. OBI would like to extend a warm welcome to our new colleagues," says Dr Sebastian Gundel, Chief Executive Officer of OBI. "I would like to thank Migros for the partnership-based collaboration over the past 25 years that was based on mutual respect and proved very successful. I look forward to continuing this partnership on other levels in future," adds Sebastian Gundel.
Focus on Migros core business
The disposal of the OBI stores is part of the Migros Group’s strategic focus on its core business, which the company announced at the beginning of February 2024. The sales processes for the micasa and Do it + Garden specialist stores are under way.
Implications for Migros Fachmarkt AG
The disposal of OBI will have absolutely no impact on the service company Migros Fachmarkt AG, which provides central services for all Migros specialist stores.
If the disposal of the OBI stores results in adjustments at decentralised Migros Group organisations, we will endeavour to find a solution within Migros for the employees affected.
