Migros becomes the first Swiss retailer to sell 'Respeggt' eggs, which do not require the culling of male chicks. Innovative gender identification in the egg means only the future laying hens are hatched. "Demeter" eggs are also made available throughout Switzerland from January. With "Demeter" eggs, the brothers of the laying hens are reared. Through these two initiatives, Migros takes a stance to combat the widespread culling of chicks. After successful trials, Migros officially starts to switch over to the entirely pesticide-free cultivation of bread grains. JOWA turns 85,000 tonnes of IP-SUISSE grain into bread and baked goods for Migros every year and is already using grain that has not been exposed to fungicides, insecticides and stalk-reducing substances. Herbicides are no longer used in crop cultivation either. By 2023, Migros will only use grain from entirely pesticide-free crops.
