“Snails” and “Shells” from canton Valais

1 / 5

Migros bought the Saverma pasta factory in Wallis after it became mired in financial difficulties. Subsequent Migros advertising boasted that the air and water in Wallis were ideal for the production of quality pasta products.

Pasta is not usually associated with canton Valais. But Migros is convinced when it takes over Saverma AG in 1951 that the good air quality and the clear water of the valley is ideal for the production of pasta.
Spaghetti and pastini for soup in the form of alphabet letters and shapes have been produced in Martigny since 1936. They are dried using the Neapolitan system – air-dried without the help of heating or ventilation. This is why the Saverma pasta can easily hold its own with ‘the king of the south’, says the Valais newspaper Le Confédéré.
Migros rehabilitates the ailing company by winding up its associated mill and modernising the pasta production. When pasta manufacturing is transferred to Jowa in Buchs, canton Aargau, in 1964, the Valais Migros cooperative takes over the factory premises and its employees.
