Triad – frozen

1 / 5

The more spacious self-service stores were equipped with freezers, and Migros began selling frozen products, as well as refrigerators. Managers sought out photos from other countries to help them choose the right freezers.

When Migros opens the first self-service shop in 1948, it immediately introduces frozen products and launches a huge refrigerator sales campaign for cooperative members. These three innovations are causally connected: only if the housewife has a fridge with a freezer compartment can she buy and store frozen goods. The shops also have to be fitted with freezers to sell these products, but traditional shops have very little space for the bulky freezers. The more spacious self-service shops, however, are fitted from the start with fridge and freezer display units. To help in planning, Migros obtains photos of fridge and freezer equipment in self-service shops abroad. These photos can be found today in the archives of the Federation of Migros Cooperatives.
