Very fine stockings are super

1 / 5

In the post-war period, nylon stockings were both innovative and expensive. Prices only began to fall after «Nylons» became available in Migros Markets. Migros stockings were a great success but were eventually superseded by the more practical pantyhose.

After the Second World War, the first nylon stockings appear in Switzerland. Like no other product on the market, they symbolise the hope of economic recovery and a better life. However, the rare “wonder things” cost between CHF 30 and CHF 40 a pair and, at 60 to 70 denier, are almost opaque.
In 1952, Migros sells stockings for the first time in the new Migros Markets. They are Swiss nylon stockings, including the daring model Original Fishnet. The stockings are now so cheap that they quickly become a best seller. The range is continually expanded and the stockings become increasingly transparent, until in 1965 the Brückenbauer reports: “40 denier is popular only for nuns; 20 or even 15 denier, flimsy, transparent until almost invisible is ‘super in stockings’. Beauty is what counts, not durability.” But the customers also show their sense of practicality: stockings are slowly but surely pushed into second place by the arrival of tights.
