What we do

Valentina Winkler, 23, took top spot in her category at the SwissSkills 2025 professional championships. In her role as an exercise and health promotion specialist, she supports a wide variety of clients at two fitness centres in Bern and Ostermundigen – from 30-year-old marathon runners to 95-year-olds looking to keep fit.

The young woman from Bern prepared meticulously for the competition – after completing a full working day, she then put together group fitness classes in the evening, studied choreographic routines and practised with the help of team members who pretended to be customers. "I've had to put leisure activities and friends on hold over recent weeks. But all the hard work has paid off," says Winkler on the phone after winning the award. She had to work on various scenarios during the competition which she was unfamiliar with beforehand, such as producing a training schedule for clients with a knee injury and heart problems.

Winkler also proved her determination by entering SwissSkills for a second time. "I wasn't really satisfied with the fourth place I achieved in 2022. So I made sure I gave it everything I had this time around." And it certainly paid off. She revealed that she'd felt a bit anxious but the routine of everyday working life has helped her to gain confidence. In the final, she also felt she was the favourite, which gave her extra incentive to perform well. The SwissSkills award will stand her in good stead for future job applications, while participating at the professional championships was also an ideal opportunity for networking. The Swiss Fitness and Health Centre Association (SFGV) has already asked her to lead cross-company courses. "It would give me great pleasure to share my knowledge with young apprentices."

In October, Valentina Winkler will begin further training specialising in exercise and health promotion. She hopes this will help her to develop on a personal level while also improving her chances of securing a leadership position in future, such as a fitness centre management role.

In total, six talented young professionals from Migros took part at this year's SwissSkills. Migros supported SwissSkills as a presenting partner for the third time since 2014.
