A person takes a pack of frozen meat from a freezer. It has a 50 per cent discount label on the packaging.

Food waste

Why is Migros freezing meat now?

This step is a major contribution towards combating food waste. At Migros, any meat products that remain unsold shortly before their use-by date are frozen and then sold at half price.

When does Migros freeze meat?

If meat products have reached their use-by date, but are still safe to eat, they are frozen. That extends their shelf life and guarantees the product's quality and safety. This measure enables Migros to achieve two goals in one go: it prevents food from being wasted, while also allowing customers to buy products at an attractive price.

How is the safety of the frozen meat guaranteed?

Freezing significantly delays the biological processes that can cause food to go bad. This extends a product's shelf life without compromising on its quality. The products frozen in this way are marked with a clearly visible green label. This label informs consumers about the exact date of freezing and the new best-before date, which indicates how long customers can leave the product in their freezer at home. It also contains information on correct use after defrosting.

Where can I find these frozen meat products?

They are stored in our freezer section in the chest containing special offers. A poster on the chest also draws attention to the products. The products themselves are marked with the aforementioned green label. This measure will be rolled out throughout Switzerland from March.

How much is the meat discounted by?

The price is reduced by 50%. An orange promotional sticker identifies these discounted products.

What do I need to consider when defrosting the meat?

It must be defrosted in the fridge, preferably overnight, as it needs a little longer in the cold. It must then be used immediately after thawing, and may not be refrozen.

Are there any types of meat that can't be frozen?

Yes. Meat with bones or offal, fish, seafood and deli items, like cold cuts or dried meat for example, cannot be frozen. Some of these products go into surprise packs for Too Good To Go that same evening or are sold to employees at a significantly lower price. Anything that can't be distributed in this way is used to produce biogas.
